How Influencers Can Stop Chasing Brand Payments

·6 min read·By Getsettld

Landing a major brand deal feels incredible. You negotiated the rate, signed the contract, and delivered amazing content that outperformed expectations. The brand is thrilled.

Then comes the hard part: waiting to get paid.

For influencers and content creators, chasing brand payments is one of the most frustrating parts of the job. Net 30 terms often magically stretch into Net 60 or Net 90. Emails go unanswered. You feel awkward demanding money from a brand you want to work with again.

Here is how you can stop playing the waiting game and get paid on time, every time.

The Root of the Problem

Why do brands pay late? It’s rarely malicious. Large brands have complex accounts payable (AP) departments. Your invoice goes from your contact (usually a campaign manager or PR rep) to their manager, then to finance, then into a massive queue.

If there's a typo on your invoice? It gets kicked back. If you didn't include the right PO (Purchase Order) number? Kicked back.

As a creator, you are essentially extending a 30-to-90 day zero-interest loan to a multi-million dollar corporation.

Strategy 1: The 50% Upfront Rule

The single most effective way to protect yourself is to require a deposit.

The Rule: Demand 50% of the total fee upon signing the contract, before any content is filmed or posted.

Many creators are afraid to ask for this, fearing the brand will walk away. They won't. If a brand has the budget for a $5,000 integration, they have the budget to pay $2,500 upfront. It is standard business practice.

If a brand outright refuses a deposit, consider it a massive red flag regarding their cash flow or intent to pay.

Strategy 2: Ironclad Invoicing

Don't give their AP department any excuse to delay your payment. Your invoice must be perfect.

Always include:

  • Your full legal name or LLC name
  • Your tax ID or EIN
  • The brand's exact billing address and company name
  • The specific PO (Purchase Order) number (Ask your contact: "Please provide the PO number so I can include it on my invoice.")
  • Clear itemization of deliverables (e.g., "1x Dedicated YouTube Integration, 2x Instagram Stories")
  • Clear payment terms (e.g., "Net 30") and exact due date
  • Your exact banking details (Wire/ACH instructions)

Send the invoice immediately upon completing the deliverables. The clock on Net 30 doesn't start when you post the content; it starts when they receive the invoice.

Strategy 3: Automate the Follow-Up

This is where the emotional drain happens. You don't want to ruin the relationship with your PR contact by nagging them for money.

The solution is automation.

Instead of manually typing out awkward emails ("Just floating this to the top of your inbox!"), use an automated system like Getsettld.

Set up a sequence:

  1. 3 days before due date: A polite reminder that the invoice is coming due.
  2. On the due date: A friendly notice that the invoice is due today.
  3. 5 days overdue: A firmer reminder.
  4. 15 days overdue: A direct request for a payment status update.

When this happens automatically, it removes the emotion. It’s just "the system" following up. Your PR contact will often appreciate the nudge, allowing them to forward your automated email to their finance team to expedite the process.

Strategy 4: Charge Late Fees (And Enforce Them)

Your contract should always include a late fee clause. A standard clause is 1.5% to 2% interest per month on the outstanding balance.

While you might not always enforce it for a payment that is two days late, having it in the contract gives you leverage. If a brand hits 60 days late on a Net 30 invoice, send an updated invoice that includes the late fee. Suddenly, paying you becomes a priority because delaying it is costing them money.

Stop Acting Like an Employee

When you do a brand deal, you are a B2B (Business to Business) service provider. You run a media company. Treat your accounts receivable with the same seriousness that the brand treats theirs.

Get money upfront, send flawless invoices, automate your follow-ups, and enforce your terms. You'll spend less time checking your bank account and more time creating great content.
